Welcome back to the “Spotlight,” where you can pop in for the week’s thought-provoking sports and entertainment stories and stay for the conditioning. Yes, there is an ongoing heat wave here in New York (joining countless other places in peril on this planet), I would say it looks like a sauna, but that would be an insult to saunas. Luckily, as perhaps a holdover from the normal past, my New York Yankees brought the heat (in a non-civilization-threatening way) and in the process drove the audience to heights not seen since more than a decade. Elsewhere in the Major League Baseball world, player agent Casey Close and his agency Excel Sports Management have turned the heat on radio host Doug Gottlieb, alleging Gottlieb defamed them by reporting via tweet that Close had hid information from (now) Los Angeles Dodgers star Freddie Freeman in his contract negotiations with his former team, the Atlanta Braves. Certainly, for the competition of the Yankees, Gottlieb and the whole world, a cooling would be welcome. But none of that seems so likely at this point. The intense but witty heat of a “Spotlight” probably won’t help either, but here goes…
- The latest celebrity bread-and-butter investment game appears to be centered around the restaurant industry, which begs the question: what do they do with their rotten tomatoes?
- Texas Tech University’s NIL collective announced that it would provide $25,000 to each of the 100 football players. This is about the best participation trophy I could dream of.
- Rapper Cardi B is called to testify in a lawsuit related to a sexually suggestive cover art for one of her mixtapes, for which she allegedly photographed the plaintiff’s distinctive tattoo on someone else’s body. The testimony is sure to get its ink flowing.
- Coinbase appears to be banking on a “Groundhog Day” type reset for its NFT market, with the help of beloved actor and comedian (and not someone you’d think of when it comes to NFT) Bill Murray, with new “drops”. If all else fails, Coinbase will have someone to handle its ghosts and gophers.
